Greek Water Polo Player Feeding Baby During Game Goes Viral

Greek water polo player of the Chania team, Markela Ploumis, was photographed feeding her baby during a match and went viral.

During the friendly water polo match between the Chania and Rethymno teams, the camera lens of Theofilos Kyriakopoulos, the photographer of the particular image, captured the powerful moment.

“And this is how we play polo,” said the caption for the photos of the Chania Water Polo team, which published the photos with Markela Ploumis.

The photos of the player feeding her child while wearing her swimsuit and cap just before diving into the pool, have since gone viral. Markela Ploumis is an example to look up to, as she proves that she can combine her love for her child with her love for the sport.

Markela Ploumis is a successful Greek water polo player, who is married with three children. She began playing water polo in Chios and went on to play for Olympiakos, the National team, Iraklis, and the Rethymno team.

Upon giving birth to her second child, the water polo player stopped training, as both children required a lot of care. However, now that both have gotten a bit older, the player decided to return to the Chania Water Polo team just after giving birth to her third child.

In an inspiring statement to ethnos.gr, the Greek water polo player said, “It all depends on how much you want to do what you have in mind. When you have the will, you can achieve everything. I have a positive mindset, I organize my schedule so that my two older children also train in the pool and I am in the pool next door with the baby and train or do my races. It’s not easy, but when you want something so badly, there are solutions.”

“I was moved to see Markela Ploumis and took the photos,” said the photographer in speaking about the viral image. “It is a very powerful moment that shows the will of the mother and the athlete to express herself. She is the best example for all young girls…For this reason, I am very happy that the issue has received positive publicity.”
