Learning Greek online has become a popular method to understand and speak the language for tens of thousands of people throughout the world.

Online teaching suits people of Greek heritage that want to connect with their loved ones in Greece and Cyprus or foreigners who want to travel and learn about the Greek culture and heritage.

With over 3,400 years of documented history, Greek has heavily influenced other western languages. English is no exception, as to this day, it still uses the roots of Greek words to coin new terms.

The Online Greek Tutor

The Online Greek Tutor, founded by Valentinos Filippou, focuses on using interactive lessons to get students to speak the language as soon as possible, so Greek skills will improve rapidly. Instead of investing time in a long drive to the nearest Greek school, The Online Greek Tutor is bringing the Greek class home.

“Teaching online has been our window to the world,” Filippou said in speaking to Greek Reporter. “We help people communicate in Greek, and they share with us their experiences and points of view. It is a journey we enjoy.”

Filippou and his Online Greek Tutor team are based in Cyprus. He has been an online Greek tutor since 2014 teaching one-on-one Skype lessons and making video lessons for his students so as to explain different aspects of the Greek language.

He has also developed the 50 Natural Greek Expressions Course which helps students learn the fifty most common expressions that Greek people use in daily life.

“Working online with people from all over the world I realized how the internet is giving so many opportunities for both teachers and students,” Filippou says.

“Most of our students are people who live far away from Greece and Cyprus but they have their homeland in their hearts,” he adds. “They want to connect with Greek culture and history through the Greek language. Others are busy individuals who cannot go to a class every week at the same time and day or they don’t have the time to commute to their class.”

Learning Greek can admittedly be quite challenging. A new vocabulary, different syntax, unfamiliar sounds, and rules of grammar might result in a new student feeling quite overwhelmed.

Online Greek Tutor tailors lessons to students’ needs

However, the Online Greek Tutor team promises to make it easy with lessons that are tailored to each student’s needs.  It specializes in adult learners and works with people from different backgrounds and with different learning goals.

The following courses are available:

The General Greek course is comprised of six levels. The courses are designed to cover all of the requirements for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Greek (Πιστοποίηση Ελληνομάθειας) which you can work towards if you like.

The Basic Greek for Tourists course allows one to learn how to greet someone in the street, order food and drinks in a taverna, seek directions or introduce oneself.

Conversational Greek is for students ready to move on to the next stage to improve their ability to converse more fluently in Greek.

Semi-Private Lessons provide the option either to follow the curriculum of our General Greek courses or conversational lessons in which the focus is only on speaking.

Group Greek Lessons are small group classes of no more than six students that help in interaction with classmates.

Greek Cypriot lessons are offered for those who want to learn the Greek Cypriot dialect.

Group Greek Summer Courses provide the flexibility to accomplish learning goals while traveling to an island at the same time.

Teachers use the best tools to support journey in learning Greek

Students who come from different parts of the world, including the US, Australia, Europe, and Canada first meet the teaching staff via a purpose-built virtual classroom for live online education.

They are being evaluated for their knowledge of Greek and set goals for learning. Times and days for weekly meetings are then agreed upon.

Online Greek Tutor teachers are enthusiastic and highly qualified instructors who will support students through the learning process. “They will make sure they have understood your needs and will find the best tools to support your journey in learning Greek,” Filippou says.

“Teaching Greek online was something new for me,” says Nancy Alexopoulou, a teacher at the Online Greek Tutor.

“I wanted to try new instructional approaches, and, under the right institutional support and availability of training resources, I found out that teaching online creates more opportunities for interaction and gives freedom to be creative with new learning experiences,” she adds.

Student Ursula Byrne shares her enthusiasm for the Online Greek Tutor.

“I have been learning with Valentinos for almost five years, and I’m now working on the C1 level. Because of the flexible nature of the online delivery of the teaching, changes in my location or daily pattern have been easily catered for. Highly recommended,” she tells Greek Reporter.
