Covid-19: Greece has Third Highest Death Rate in Europe

Greece confirmed 17,662 new Covid-19 infections and 106 deaths associated with the virus in the last 24 hours, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) announced on Thursday.

A total of 18,825 cases were recorded in the country the day before, Wednesday; 106 people had died with the virus during that 24-hour period.

Since the pandemic began, Greece has confirmed a total of 2,002,206 Covid-19 infections. Of the cases recorded in the last seven days, 412 infections are related to travel from abroad and 2,472 to other confirmed cases.

The 106 deaths associated with the coronavirus recorded in the last 24 hours bring the total number of people who have died with the virus in Greece to 23,833. Of those who passed away, 95.1 percent had an underlying condition and/or were aged 70 or over.

78.17% of intubated patients with Covid-19 in Greece unvaccinated

A total of 568 coronavirus patients are on ventilators in hospitals on Thursday, compared to the 561 undergoing the treatment the day before.

Their median age is 66 and 83.3 percent have an underlying condition and/or are aged 70 or over. Of the total, 444 (78.17%) are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and 124 (21.83%) are fully vaccinated. Another 4,071 patients have been discharged from ICUs in Greece since the pandemic began.

In addition, 547 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospitals in the last 24 hours. The average admission of patients with Covid-19 to hospitals over the last 7 days was 473.

The median age of those with new infections is 35 years, while the median age of the deceased is 78.

Covid-19 death rate in Greece third highest in EU

Greece has the third highest coronavirus death rate in all of the European Union, with Croatia and Bulgaria ranking first and second, respectively.

The death toll of all three countries surpasses 100 deaths per million people. In Greece, there are 136.05 deaths from Covid-19 out of one million people.

Greece’s death toll is a staggering three times higher than the European average, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

The European countries with the lowest death rates are Belgium, the Czech Republic, and Germany, with 33.35, 31.05, and 24.91 deaths per million people.

Novavax, the protein-based coronavirus vaccine produced by the US company of the same name, will begin offering its inoculations to the people of Greece in early March.

The Gaithersburg, Maryland-based pharmaceuticals firm, which earned emergency authorization for its vaccine in the EU on December 20, received the go-ahead from UK drug regulatory authorities in the UK today.

Greek health officials stated that the first batches of Novavax will arrive in Greece on February 21 and inoculations with the vaccine will begin in March.

General Secretary of Primary Healthcare Marios Themistokleous said on Tuesday that Greece is expected to receive 474,000 Novavax doses in February and March. The first shipment, comprising 168,000 shots, will be distributed to vaccine centers throughout the country.
