Greek-Estonian actress Mena Suvari will be joining the new horror film, “The Accursed”, directed by Kevin Lewis.
Suvari, who shot to fame when she was young as the star of “American Beauty,” has been building a career for herself in horror and psychological thrillers. In “The Accursed,” Suvari takes a turn playing a villain.
Mena Suvari’s Role in “The Accursed”
The movie follows a young woman – Elly, played by Sarah Grey from “Legends of Tomorrow” – who is dealing with a traumatic past. One day, while volunteering abroad as a nurse, she receives the news that her estranged mother has committed suicide.
Elly returns home to sell her mother’s home, but cannot escape terrifying memories and visions of her family. Suvari plays the role of Alma, a temporary caregiver who seemingly offers Elly some relief as she offers to look after the comatose older woman in her cabin.
However, it soon becomes clear that dark and mysterious forces are at play, and Alma is not as she seems. A history of witchcraft, curses, and dark magic may explain what has been haunting Elly’s family for generations.
In addition to Mena Suvari and Sarah Grey, the rest of the cast of “The Accursed” includes Alexis Knapp, Meg Foster, and Sarah Dumont.
Kevin Lewis previously directed “Willy’s Wonderland,” an action-comedy horror film that was released during the pandemic lockdown and actually generated a devoted fanbase. “The Accursed” was written by Rob Kennedy, whose previous credits include “Midnight Man.”
Suvari’s Career and Personal Life
Suvari most recently appeared in the Netflix horror film “What Lies Below,” as well as “Paradise Cove”. She also guest starred on the prestigious show “American Horror Story” as Elizabeth Short, the famous Black Dahlia.
In addition to currently having five films in either post-production or filming, Suvari has been experiencing success in her personal life as well. The actress recently welcomed her first child, a baby boy.
In October of 2020 Suvari made the surprise announcement that she was pregnant at 41 years of age. Her husband, Michael Hope, and Suvari welcomed the arrival of their son, Christopher Alexander Hope, in early April of 2020.
Hope and Suvari have been married since October of 2018, after dating for two years. The couple decided to forego the usual Hollywood fanfare, and instead had a secret wedding surrounded by close friends and family. It was Suvari’s third marriage.
Directing a Female-Led Horror Film
Regarding working with the film’s cast, Kevin Lewis shared his excitement about directing a horror film like “The Accursed” with mostly women, including Mena Suvari.
Lewis said, “this opportunity, to blend an incredible story with working with an exceptional female driven cast, is a tremendous moment for me as a director and horror lover.”
“The Accursed” will be released in 2022, although the exact month is still unknown.
