Writer and producer George Pelecanos is helming a new limited series for HBO titled “We Own This City.”

The HBO Series’ Story

The Greek-American creator, who previously brought audiences the critically-acclaimed hit “The Wire,” is excited to bring audiences a new project. Production for “We Own This City” starts in July of 2021.

Just like his previous success, the show is set in Baltimore. It depicts the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force, and delves into the issues of crime and corruption in the city.

The six-hour-long series is based on a book by Justin Fenton titled “We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption.”

Pelecanos is writing and executive producing the series along with David Simon. Other writers include Ed Burns and Bill Zorzi, who also worked on “The Wire.”

Reinaldo Marcus Green has been tapped as the series’ director and an executive producer on the project.

“We Own This City” will look at some pressing social and criminal justice issues that still plague the US today. The show takes a hard look at how drug prohibition and mass arrests were often prioritized over more pressing and serious police work.

Cast of “We Own This City”

The HBO Series’ leading cast was recently announced on Deadline. We Own This City’s stars include Darrell Britt-Gibson, Rob Brown, McKinley Belcher III, and Larry Mitchell.

Mitchell is best known for his turn as Al Pacino’s son in “Paterno.” He also appeared as a police officer in the critically acclaimed movie “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” McKinley Belcher III appeared in “Ozark” and “The Passage.”

Darrell Britt-Gibson performed in both “Barry” and the award-winning movie “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” Other cast members include Jon Bernthal and Josh Charles.

Pelecanos’ Previous Shows

George Pelecanos has a long-standing relationship with HBO. His previous show “The Deuce” premiered on the network, starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhall. It ran for three seasons and got rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Pelecanos’ shows usually focus on the criminal underworld. Prior to making the leap to television he wrote twenty books. Most were works on detective fiction that were set in and around Washington, D.C., where Pelecanos hails from.

He held a series of odd jobs before becoming a published author, and quickly rose to fame after “The Wire,” starring Idris Elba, premiered on US television. A release date has not yet been set for “We Own This City.”

Pelecanos has been very active in the Greek-American community as well. In October of 2019 he was honored at the Hellenic Charity Ball held by the Elios Foundation in San Francisco.
