Greece Has Administered Over 6 Million Doses of Coronavirus Vaccine

Greece has administered over 6 million total doses of the coronavirus vaccine, Marios Themistokleous, Greek Secretary General for Primary Health Care, announced on Saturday.

This brings the total number of fully vaccinated Greeks to over 2.2 million, a figure which includes those who have received the two-dose vaccines, like AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Moderna, as well as those who have received the one-dose Johnson and Johnson shot.

Despite the impressive numbers, Themistokleous noted that Greece could progress even faster with its vaccination campaign if the country only had access to more of the shot.

“We could increase the capabilities of the vaccination system at any time, if we had more doses of the vaccine,” Themistokleous noted Saturday.

On small islands, over 80% of population fully vaccinated

In reference to the Greek islands, which he stressed are a major “strategic advantage” for the country, particularly in the realm of tourism, Themistokleous stressed that the country’s campaign to vaccinate island residents has nearly finished with great success.

On many of the country’s 69 islands with populations of less than 10,000 people, over 80% of residents are fully vaccinated.

In terms of opening up appointments for younger Greeks aged 18 to 29, Themistokleous stressed that spots would be available first for those aged 25 to 29, followed by Greeks who are 18 to 24, in the near future.

Greece records 932 new coronavirus cases, 35 deaths

Greece recorded 932 new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, which marks 180 fewer instances of the virus than the 1,112 cases recorded on Friday.

Just one of Saturday’s total cases was identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.

Additionally, there are 416 patients with Covid-19 on ventilators on Saturday, which is 29 fewer than the 445 patients undergoing the invasive treatment in the country yesterday, Friday.

Tragically, 35 people suffering from the coronavirus passed away in the country over the past 24-hour period, which represents one more than those who died with the virus on Friday.

 457 cases of Covid-19 diagnosed in Attica alone; 85 in Thessaloniki

Of the 932 new coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 457 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.

Instances of the virus were particularly high in the center of the city itself, where 230 cases of Covid-19 were identified Saturday.

Tests showed that in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, a total of 85 cases of Covid-19 had been diagnosed in the last 24 hours.

Over 400,000 total coronavirus cases in Greece

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 408,789 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the cases diagnosed in Greece in the past seven days, just 34 are associated with foreign travel and 1,913 have been linked to contact with a known case.

Of the 416 patients intubated currently, 86.1% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 67.

On Saturday alone, 149 people with the coronavirus were admitted to hospitals in Greece.

Additionally, a total of 2,498 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 35 new deaths recorded on Saturday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 12,253; 95.2% of those who have passed away with the virus were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.
