Heads of state, policymakers, academics and business leaders from around the globe will participate in the Delphi Economic Forum (DEF) which kicks off in a hybrid format on Monday at the Zappeion Megaron in Athens.
The 6th edition of the Annual Conference takes place in a hybrid format on May 10-15, 2021, at the Zappeion Megaron in Athens, under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou.
In a highly symbolic year for Greece, the Delphi Economic Forum VI, which will last until May 15, will commemorate the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution.
The conference, which features a roster of current and former national leaders, will include a keynote speech by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and an address by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The DEF 2021 will feature eight thematic pillars: Greek Revolution Bicentennial: 1821-2021; Geopolitics & International Security; Global Economy; the Future of Europe; Sustainability and Climate Change; People, Organizations and Society; Technology and the Future of Growth; and Greece: Structural Reforms and Sustainable Growth.

A key topic will be “An Account of Two Centuries of Existence.”
Other sessions will focus on the following subjects:
An in-depth view on the Eastern Mediterranean and the scramble that is underway between countries in the region for access to recently-discovered gas fields.
A discussion about how the COVID-19 pandemic is reshaping the world trade landscape — and what to do about it.
The Future of Europe: Can Europe find its place amongst the hegemonies of US and China and balance the strenuous relationship with Russia and Turkey, while reforming European foreign, security, and migration policy?
A review on renewable energy resources as an antidote to climate change.
Discussions about a fair and growth-oriented distribution of wealth and the role the state should play in such an arrangement are taken to the forefront of public debate.
Technology and the future of growth: panel discussions will focus on what is at stake, why technological change has pushed income inequality higher and generated fears about a “robocalypse” (massive job losses from automation), and why this should not cause despair.
Dozens of speakers
The forum will be in parallel streams. One of the main events, offered on the Apollon Stream, features a conversation between Mitsotakis and his Spanish counterpart, Pedro Sanchez, chaired by Politico Managing Director Florian Eder and introduced by Symeon G. Tsomokos, the DEF organizer. It begins at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
That will be followed at 5:20 p.m. on the same stream by the session titled “Leaders who Shaped the Nation.”
Looking back on the 200 years of the modern Greek state, the session, chaired by journalist and philologist Vicky Flessa, will present five key statesmen (Ioannis Kapodistrias, Harilaos Trikoupis, Eleftherios Venizelos, Konstantinos Karamanlis and Andreas Papandreou) through lectures by historians and university professors. This session ends at 6:55 p.m.
Other speakers throughout the week include Kersti Kaljulaid, President of the Republic of Estonia, Zuzana Čaputová, President of the Slovak Republic, Archbishop Elpidophoros, Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, Albert Bourla, CEO Pfizer and Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, President Greece 2021 Committee.
