The Greek mountain village was fundamental in the War of Independence

In ancient times, residents of Vytina worshiped the ancient gods Demeter and Poseidon.
In the nearby village of Magouliana, one can find the ruins of an ancient Temple of Poseidon to this day.
Vytina played an important role in Greece’s War of Independence against the Ottomans in 1821, and the town is considered almost sacred for its historical significance.
The area was essential in the war, as it supplied the Greek Army with bread and took care of the injured.
Many chieftains, captains, and fighters in the War of Independence came from the area.
In 1825 and 1826, the troops of Ibrahim burned Vytina seven times, due to its residents’ active involvement in the liberation struggle.
