Ambassador Maslov Highlights Russian Role in Greek Revolution of 1821

Andrei Maslov, the Ambassador of Russia to Greece, explained recently his nation’s role in assisting the Greeks during the War of Independence and the Greek Revolution of 1821.
Speaking with Greece’s OPEN tv, Maslov explained how the Russians were either directly or indirectly involved in the struggle to overthrow the Ottomans.

”This was an era of constant Russo-Turkish wars, which, among other reasons, had as a goal the liberation of all Christian populations in the Balkans,” the ambassador noted.
”It’s not a matter of luck that in 1814, the Filiki Eteria (the Society of Friends) was established in Russia,” Maslov said in Greek.
The Russian ambassador also explained that Tsar Alexander I was a great Philelene who believed in Greece’s independence, and that was the reason why he appointed Greek Ioannis Kapodistrias as the Empire’s Foreign Minister at the time.
