A total of 816 Covid-19 cases were diagnosed in Greece on Wednesday, which is 112 fewer than the 928 cases that were recorded in the country just one day earlier, on Tuesday.
Tragically, 48 people with the virus passed away in the country over the past 24 hour period, which is eight more than those recorded yesterday.
Currently, 399 patients with Covid-19 are intubated in Greece, six fewer than those who were intubated in the country on Tuesday.
A large portion of Wednesday’s cases were diagnosed in the areas surrounding Greece’s two largest urban centers — Athens and Thessaloniki.
In Attica, home to the capital city of Athens, there were 363 cases, 87 of which were diagnosed in the center of Athens. A total of 95 new cases were recorded in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city.
In total, 142,267 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the country since the beginning of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus.
Of this total, 5,547 are associated with foreign travel, and 42,716 are associated with contact with a known case.
Of the 399 patients intubated currently, 82.7% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their median age is 68, and 270 of the patients are male.
A total of 912 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
The 48 new deaths recorded on Wednesday bring the total number of fatalities in the country to 5,099. Of all those who lost their lives after suffering from the virus, a total of 3,023 have been male.
The median age of those who passed away with Covid-19 is 79, and 95.5% of them were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.

Vaccine distribution

Since the distribution process started in late December, over 20,000 Greeks have received the Covid-19 vaccine in the country.
Vaccination of the general population against the coronavirus — starting with those aged 85 or over — will begin on January 20, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Tuesday.
At a meeting he chaired at the headquarters of the Civil Protection Secretariat, he said that the online platform for the electronic booking of inoculation appointments will open to public access on January 11.
Mitsotakis added that it is “imperative for all citizens to register for paperless electronic prescriptions, as this will allow them to receive electronic notifications for their appointments.”
Some 5,000 citizens are currently being vaccinated every day, he noted, and “if this is kept up, it will help ensure that the scheduling of vaccinations is met successfully.”
On Monday, Greek authorities announced that vaccinations will reach a minimum of 220,000 citizens by the end of January.
