Cosmote Phone Hacking Compromises Data of Millions of Greeks, Including PM

According to reports from the Greek news media and Cosmote, the largest phone service provider in Greece has been hacked.
Reportedly, this computer crime has placed the data of at least 3 to 5 million Greeks at risk, including the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and well as many other important government and political figures across the country.
The data obtained by hackers included logs of calls and texts exchanged between cellphone numbers from the period of September 1 to September 5, as well as the identifying 15-digit code for each individual customer.
The stolen customer information was held on a server located outside of Greece, leading officials to believe that the hackers were not located in the country.
According to Greek press, representatives of Cosmote have expressed the hope that the data was taken for use in advertising or business, rather than for more nefarious purposes.
In an official announcement by the company, they acknowledged the theft of user data, and claim that all the necessary steps were taken after the hack to protect customers.
Additionally, Cosmote stated that the company successfully prevents hundreds of such hacking attempts every month.
Investigation into the source and reason for the theft of data is currently underway.
The stolen information is being monitored as part of the investigation, and so far no customer data has been published.
