The deadly 6.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey on Friday has nothing to do with Greece, said seismologist Efthymios Lekkas on Saturday.
The massive tremor in the Elazig and Malatya provinces has left 22 dead and 1,200 injured according to Cnn.com. Lekkas who is ready to visit Turkey along with other Greek seismologists said that Greece should not worry.
Lekkas explained to the Athens Macedonian News Agency that the geotectonic composition of the earthquake-stricken area in Turkey is completely different from that of Greece and also there is no correlation between the tectonic structures that could transfer earthquake activity to Greece.
The Greek seismologist also said that there is a great possibility of a strong aftershock in eastern Turkey
Greece’s PM Mitsotakis calls President of Turkey to offer help
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to express his condolences to the Turkish people over the deadly earthquake and offer help, according to the prime minister’s office.
“The Greek prime minister noted that Greece was ready to assist in search and rescue operations, if necessary. The Turkish president thanked the prime minister, stressing that the situation is currently being monitored by Turkish authorities and will be evaluated again in the [Saturday] morning”, the office said.
Earlier, Mitsotakis wrote on Twitter:
“My wholehearted sympathy to President @RTErdogan and the Turkish people following the devastating earthquake that has hit Turkey. Our search and rescue teams stand ready to assist.”
