A tanker was damaged after being struck by an unidentified projectile while sailing out of the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report submitted to United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).

The vessel’s company security officer reported that the projectile struck the tanker’s port side, causing structural damage.

All crew members were reported safe, and no marine pollution had been detected at the time of the initial report.

Authorities Investigate Incident

The origin and type of the projectile have not been established. Authorities have not determined whether the vessel was struck by a missile, drone or another weapon.

The tanker’s identity, flag and operating company were not immediately disclosed.

An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway.

Warning to Commercial Shipping

UKMTO advised vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz to exercise heightened caution and immediately report suspicious activity.

The incident comes amid continuing security concerns for commercial shipping in the strategic waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
