Matthew Palmer, the Deputy Assistant Secretary at the US State Department Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, came to Nicosia on Thursday to pay an official visit to the Republic of Cyprus.
Palmer will meet with the President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades as well as the country’s Foreign Minister, Nikos Christodoulides, among other officials, on Thursday.
Palmer is expected to discuss with his interlocutors about the problem of the Turkish occupation on the island, energy-related issues, and the bilateral issues which concern Cyprus and the United States.
Among the subjects discussed will be the lifting of the US arms embargo on Cyprus and the issue of the UN peacekeeping operation in Cyprus, in light of the American position regarding UN peacekeeping operations worldwide.
The high-ranking American official is also expected to attend a reception hosted on Thursday evening at the American Embassy in Nicosia, in an early celebration of the July 4th anniversary of US Independence.
Palmer has spearheaded US efforts in the development and execution of US policy for all aspects of engagement in the Western Balkans and Southern Europe, including Greece, Turkey and Cyprus since 2018.
