Speaking at Athens‘ Kivotos Theatre on Monday evening, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras urged all progressive political forces to fight against the far-right and neo-liberalism in the upcoming European elections in May.
During an event where Tsipras exchanged views with young people, the PM said that what Europe needs today is “the greatest possible rallying of all progressive powers, from the left of the Left to the left of Social-Democrats, including the Greens.”
Tsipras urged them to join the fight against the far-right and against neo-liberalism, ”which both feed fascism.”
Tsipras called everyone to participate in the European elections, saying that “the European idea, the idea of the European Union, is not a conservative idea, despite the fact it was managed by conservative powers.”
He added that the creation of the European Union was actually a ”radical, trailblazing and progressive idea.”
The Prime Minister warned that nationalism has returned to Europe, ”wearing the guise of going against the system,” something that Tsipras characterized as ”misleading.”
Referring to the time of the next national general elections, Tsipras noted that “even though many have tried to tempt me to hold general elections the same day with the European elections in May, it’s not going to happen.”
He then noted that the general elections in Greece will take place quite soon, in October of this year.
