ETIAS: Americans Will Need To Register Before Visiting Europe After 2021

According to a decision taken by the European Commission in July 2018, which was also voted on by the European Parliament, Americans will be among the non-EU nations, whose citizens will need to pre-register and pay a small fee before they travel to a member-state of the EU after 2021.

Following the EU’s decision, non-EU nationals, exempt from visa requirements, will have to get authorization before traveling to the EU.

According to the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), US citizens, will fill out an electronic form prior to their travel with their personal data, travel document information, home address and contact information, as well as the EU member-state of their first intended entry.

Americans between 18 and 70 years old will have to pay a small fee of €7 ($7.9) and after this, they will have the right to travel inside the EU for as many times as they wish, over a three-year period.

Back in July 2018, referring to the new system, Dimitris Avramopoulos, the EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship said that “the new ETIAS will ensure that we no longer have an information gap on visa-free travelers”.

This decision will cover the EU’s Schengen area, which is comprised of 26 European states that have officially abolished passport usage requirements and all other types of border control at their mutual borders.
