Greek Government Calls Farmers for Talks as Roadblocks Continue

Greece’s minister of agriculture urged striking farmers on Thursday to lift the roadblocks they had set across several highways and proceed to the negotiating table.
“I am inviting the farmers at the roadblocks to meet and discuss… so we can take note of their demands and hear our answers,” Agriculture Minister Stavros Arachovitis announced. He added that “the goodwill for dialogue exists.”
Hundreds of farmers have parked their tractors along one lane of the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway at the Nikaia junction in Farsala on the Athens-Patra national highway. The block is near the Greek town of Aigio.
The farmers’ demands include the setting of a minimum price for their products, lower electricity prices, the abolition of value-added tax, better pensions and reduced social security contributions to the state.
