Turkish Defense Minister Accuses Greece of Violating Libya’s Territorial Waters

Turkey’s Defense Minister Hulusi Akar has presented maps to the Libyan government in an effort to show that Greece is trying to encroach upon the area of Libya’s continental shelf, Kathimerini says citing Turkey’s Yeni Safak newspaper.

The Turkish newspaper reports are accompanied by two maps which Akar allegedly showed to Libyan government officials.

According to one of the maps, neither the presence of the nearly islands of Cyprus or Crete influence the marine territory of Libya or Turkey, meaning that there can be sea borders between the two countries. The map completely excluded the existence of the Greek continental shelf in the eastern Mediterranean.

The Kathimerini report stated that during a recent visit to Tripoli, Akar reportedly claimed that Greece is exploiting the political instability in Libya with an eye to usurping control over a large section of the Libyan continental shelf area, which he claimed that Greece has also done to Turkey.
