A Greek-American convict has been named as one of the primary suspects in the murder of prominent organized crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger on Tuesday.
The New York Times and the Boston Globe, citing unnamed sources close to the ongoing investigation, cited 51-year-old Fotios “Freddy” Geas as one of the two main suspects in Bulger’s death. Geas, originally from Massachusetts, was convicted in 2003 for the murder of a crime boss and an FBI informant. He has been serving his sentence at the high-security United States Penitentary, Hazleton, located in West Virginia.
Bulger, himself an FBI informant prior to his arrest in 2011, was found unresponsive in his cell in Boston on Tuesday morning. The prison’s medical examiner later pronounced him dead. His death is being investigated as a homicide.
