Medal-Winning Runner Dedicates Race to Greek Fire Victims (video)

Greece has had another spectacular night of international sporting success as runner Maria Belibasaki only narrowly lost out on gold in the women’s 400m at the European Championships in Berlin.
In a post-race interview she dedicated her silver-winning performance to the victims of Greece’s deadly July fires which claimed almost 100 lives.

Running wearing a black ribbon as a sign of mourning, the Cretan 27-year-old also set a new Greek record of 50.45 seconds. She lost out to Polish runner Gastina Sveti who took first place by just four tenths of a second.
Belibasaki’s performance brings to five the number of medals won by Greek athletes at the 2018 European Championships.
