U.S. Treasury Is Not Against IMF Participation in Greece's Bailout Program

The U.S. administration is not opposing the International Monetary Fund‘s financial participation in Greece’s rescue program, said U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Tuesday.
Speaking to the Financial Times, the U.S. Treasury Secretary answered to speculations that the Donald Trump administration would prefer that the IMF should not participate in the country’s bailout program because Greece’s problem is a European problem.
Mnuchin’s comments, however, suggest this is not the case and that the U.S. government considers that the Greek debt is an issue of concern because it affects the world economy.
“We think this is primarily a European issue, although it is something we are monitoring because it is important to the world economy and world financial markets,” Mnuchin said. However, he added, lending to rich countries should not be the Fund’s main task.
The U.S. Treasury Secretary also said that he hopes the Greek issue would be resolved in the “near future.”
