Refugee Soccer Team to Compete in the Greek League [video]

refugee-soccer-teamThere are more than 3,200 refugees living at the container migrant camp at Skaramagas, just west of Piraeus near Athens and now thanks to the help of a local NGO, a group of talented athletes have formed a new soccer team that will be competing in the Greek Soccer League.
Hope Refugees United is the name of the new team that was formed in great part due to the NGO Organization Earth, which is an active outreach organization supporting soccer training of the refugee team, and headed by non other than ex-Olympiakos Vice President, Petros Kokkalis.
There are no fights on the teams made up of refugees who are young men from all different backgrounds. When they are on the field they are a united team of friends with a common goal; to live out their passion for a sport which they all love.
The group regularly makes trips outside of the camp to train in at a soccer field located in Athens.
Organization Earth’s efforts to provide a creative outlet for the passion of sport does not end with the newest addition of Hope Refugee United to the Greek League’s roster. Back at the Skaramagas camp they organize soccer games and training for refugee children. “The goals of this program is to “de-ghetto” refugees and get them out of the camps into normal society,” Kokkalis said to voanews.com.
