New government data points to 57,182 migrants and asylum seekers currently stranded in Greece. The figures released show that 22,692 individuals are currently in northern Greece, 2,279 are in central Greece, 251 are in southern Greece, whereas an estimated 9,140 people are scattered around the eastern Aegean islands. There were 85 arrivals recorded in the past 24 hours.
The official centers in Attica house 10,168 refugees at the moment, whereas 5,423 are camping out at makeshift facilities.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) called for the closure of reception centers for migrants across the country after its officials carried out spot-checks at 16 northern Greek centers. The conditions there were found to be substandard and posing public health risks.
KEELPNO’s findings were forwarded to the ministries of Migration, Policy, Defense and Health. The cramming of hundreds of migrants into abandoned military barracks and factories were viewed as posing health risks for migrants and the public at large.
