Psychiatric Hospital Employees Protest at Labor Ministry, No Salaries Paid for 5 Months

Dromokaitio Mental Hospital protestsAmong financial hardships austerities have brought on in Greece, there is mounting outrage by Greek people who are employed but do not get paid in both private and public sectors.
Last Wednesday, cleaners employed at the Dromokaitio Psychiatric Hospital in Haidari protested outside of the Labor Ministry, demanding to get paid their salaries for the previous 5 months from the government.
Although the clinic has recently received 90,000 euros in emergency funding, workers at the Dromokaitio Psychiatric Hospital claim that it is still not enough to cover the delayed payments for their salaries and that the hospital is underfunded. Their union also claims that the hospital lacks medical supplies as well as basic items.
Driving the point, the president of the union added that “We have to choose: either we will pay the employees or feed the patients.”
The workers blocked the entrance to the Labor Ministry and set up a traditional stove where they cooked and served beans for themselves as they protested in front of cleaning smocks spelling out “we are hungry” while pinned to a clothesline with clothespins.
