Defense Minister Calls Island VAT Hike he Voted on 'Criminal' and 'Unconstitutional'

STATEMENT
Greek right-wing Independent Greeks (ANEL) leader/Defense Minister Panos Kammenos — a junior coalition member of the Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government —  fueled controversy with a statement he made on Tuesday while visiting the island of Syros. He said that the recent VAT hike for the islands was “criminal” and “unconstitutional.” Kammenos made this statement just two days after voting in favor of the measure in Greek Parliament.
The VAT hike is part of a packet of austerity measures that include tax increases. The rise from 23 to 24 percent was passed by a slim coalition majority on Sunday afternoon. Specifically, he said that the VAT increase is “a criminal act, an unconstitutional decision.”
The main opposition conservative New Democracy (ND) party reacted to the statement made by Kammenos and called upon him to tender his resignation. Kammenos was a member of ND before being expelled and creating his own party in 2012.
