Refugees and Migrants Seek for Asylum Right Before they are Returned to Turkey

Tomorrow’s refugee and migrant refoulments from Chios island towards Turkey are up “in the air,” as 166 people requested for asylum, which sets back the procedure at least one month.
According to ANA-MPA, in Lesvos island, out of the 3,021 refugees and migrants, 2,800 people have made an application for asylum. In addition, 600 people have made a similar application in Chios island.
The applications are being processed by asylum services in various hot-spots, which for the moment are understaffed. The employees that have reached the islands through the Greek authorities cannot respond to the amount of work that has piled up, whereas the EU specialists that are expected, have not arrived in the islands.
In the meantime, while the process of refoulments from the Greek islands towards Turkey are continuing, more than 200 refugees and migrants have arrived on the islands of the Eastern Aegean in the past 24 hours. Since Monday morning, and until Tuesday at 9 am, 187 people reached the shores of Lesvos and 20 in Samos.
