Cypriot Leaders Address 30 Billion Euro Cost of Reunification

Anastasiades – AkinciCyprus’s two leaders are currently negotiating the reunification of the divided island, with the potential costs extending beyond politics and societal disputes.
According to Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci addressed the monetary cost of the reunification process during separate interviews with CNN Turk on Monday. The two leaders noted that reunification could to cost between 25 and 30 billion euros, Xinhua news agency reports.
Despite the high cost, Anastasiades and Akinci expressed their faith that a solution will be found.
The two sides restarted negotiations through a United Nations initiative in May 2015 in an effort to unite the island that has been divided since 1974. Since May there have been various rounds of negotiations.
However, in spite of any progress, Akinci argued that external support from the international realm will be required to offer restitution to people who were affected by the division.
