Greece to Hold Cyprus' Vote on Potential Turkey Concessions at EU Summit

tsipras-anastasiadisGreek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will vote on behalf of Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades on whether the European Union should make concessions to Turkey in the face of the refugee crisis, Euractiv reports.
Anastasiades  who will not be attending Thursday’s European Union summit, left on Wednesday for a state visit to China.
Thursday’s discussion will be on potentially providing Turkey with incentives to act and reduce the flow of migrants and refugees from Turkey to Europe. These perks reportedly include further funding from the European Union, additional visa waivers and improvement in Turkey’s application for European Union membership. Turkey has been a candidate for EU membership since 1999.
“The goal of my talks in Ankara was to stem the wave of refugees to Europe. An agreement with Turkey makes sense if it effectively reduces the inflow of refugees. Concessions will only be justified when this goal is achieved,” European Council President Donald Tusk noted in a letter addressed to the EU’s leaders on Tuesday.
