The final results of the joint exit poll by five different research companies show leftist SYRIZA is a clear winner over conservative New Democracy. The exit polls show SYRIZA getting 33-35 percent of the vote with New Democracy trailing at 28.5-30 percent.
Ultra-rightist Golden Dawn will be third getting 7-8 percent. Fourth place will be center-left PASOK-DIMAR at 6-7 percent and the Greek Communist Party (KKE) both follows with 5.5.-6.5 percent of the vote. Center-left Potami come sixth getting 4-4.5 percent.
Independent Greeks (ANEL) seem to be getting in parliament with 3-4 percent. So do the Centrists Union at the same percentages (3-4) and almost secure a place in parliament. Finally, extreme-leftist Popular Unity looks like it is in last place with 2.5-3 percent.
The first exit poll figures show that Alexis Tsipras’ SYRIZA cannot form majority government.
The race between SYRIZA and New Democracy has been very close, with the leftist party getting a 1.5-4 percent lead in all opinion polls on Friday, the last day of the campaign.
Alexis Tsipras has promised to fight corruption and put an end to vested interests and the oligarchy that are responsible for recession and the Greek debt. The SYRIZA chief has asked Greek voters to “sweep away the old” and look forward to the future. He said that now his government is no longer encumbered by bailout negotiations, he will be able to implement the party’s progressive program for social justice and growth.
New Democracy leader Vangelis Meimarakis based his election campaign on political stability by pointing out the mistakes made by the leftist government in the past seven months. He promised voters that his party will restore the Greek economy, create jobs and bring investments, accusing his opponent that he chased away private investments after he closed the banks and imposed capital controls.
SYRIZA was polling roughly between 24 and 31 percent, while New Democracy polled between 20 to 30 percent during the short election campaign period. Golden Dawn was steadily over 6 percent, PASOK-DIMAR between 4 and 6.5 percent, To Potami between 4 and 6 percent, KKE between 5 and 5.5 percent, Popular Unity between 3 and 4 percent, the Centrist Union slightly over 3 percent in all polls, while ANEL was between 2 and 3 percent.
