Varoufakis Helps WikiLeaks Raise 100,000 Euros

varoufakisFormer Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis has found another cause to devote himself. He has become a WikiLeaks supporter, helping the international, non-profit, journalistic organization to crowd-source 100,000 euros.
The organization plans to use this amount in order to uncover the trade treaty signed between the US and the European Union, also known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).
According to a WikiLeaks announcement, Varoufakis was among the first to contribute to their goal. Furthermore, Australian computer programmer, publisher and journalist Julian Assange, who co-founded Wikileaks, was also supported by fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, Belarusian philosopher Evgeny Morozov and American journalist Glenn Greenwald.
The online crowdfunding campaign has already managed to raise around 43,000 dollars in just one day, however, the exact amount that these celebrities have contributed has not been announced.
SYRIZA MP Varoufakis also took the time to post the link to the online campaign on his Twitter account. “Transparency needs a helping hand in the Eurozone but also in trade (TTIP) negotiations that affect it. Join in!” he wrote.

Assange founded WikiLeaks in 2006 after an earlier career in hacking and programming. WikiLeaks became well-known in 2010 when it published U.S. military and diplomatic documents. Assange has been under investigation in the United States since then. In 2012, facing extradition to Sweden, he sought refuge at the Embassy of Ecuador in London and was granted political asylum.
