Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) and their coalition partners, the Social Democrats (SPD) are highly critical of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, for their decision to turn down an “extraordinarily generous” offer, reported Germany’s international broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Germany’s newspaper Bild, the CDU’s parliamentary leader, Volker Kauder, said: “The whole thing is just absurd”.
Kauder also accused the Greek leftist SYRIZA government’s decision to hold a referendum on July 5 as a “a trick to hold onto power”. He said Tsipras and Varoufakis are “leading their country into chaos”.
In turn, Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he does not understand how Greece’s government can call on voters to reject Europe’s proposal.
On the other hand, Germany’s parliamentary leader of the Left party, Gregor Gysi, told the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency that Chancellor Merkel would be making a “profound mistake” if she continued down her current path regarding Greece “for ideological reasons.”
As for Germany’s Greens, Katrin Göring-Eckhardt and Anton Hofreiter, they said the creditors’ last offer, to be held in Greece on July 5, could amount to an opportunity for the people to “correct their government’s ‘no’.”
