Through an extensive photographic article, entitled “Athens: A Canvas for Austerity-Themed Street Art,” the news agency Bloomberg presented several works of art found in the streets of the Greek capital that were inspired by the economic crisis.
The article noted that “As world leaders struggle to keep Greece in the euro, artists are taking to the streets to express their own view of how the crisis should play out.”
While people are flooding the streets of Athens, protesting against austerity and organizing strikes, there are a few artists who roam the streets looking for the perfect place to express themselves. “A picture of a nation grappling with its relationship with the rest of Europe” slowly emerges and one of the most common themes is that of a nation ready to break away,” it added.
The street art scene in Greece has been active since the late 1980s but gained momentum in Athens leading up to the country’s 2011 financial crisis, with a number of artists raising voices of resistance, creating allegorical works and social commentary in the historic city center and Exarhia.
