German Chancellor Angela Merkel has invited Greek PM Alexis Tsipras to a meeting in Berlin, the PM’s office announced.
“Mrs. Angela Merkel asked for a phone meeting with the Greek PM this morning,” a senior Greek government official said. The phone call took place Monday afternoon and the German chancellor asked Tsipras to visit Berlin on March 23.
The invitation comes against the backdrop of increasing friction between the two nations, with Berlin alarmed by the prospect of Athens not honoring past financial pledges and Greece seeing Germany as the main defender of tough austerity.
The meeting will take place after the European Summit in Brussels on March 19 and 20 where Tsipras is expected to raise the Greek issues.
