Forty years ago today, Greece mourned the death of Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis at the age of 69. Onassis died only two years after suffering the overwhelming loss of his beloved son Alexandros. His life story can only be compared to that of a true legend and his legacy left its mark upon Greece.
He rubbed noses with the world’s elite and all the significant personalities of his time — many of whom enjoyed the infamous Greek hospitality of Onassis on his legendary yacht “Christina.” Among them was Winston Churchill.
Below is a rare film excerpt showing the German people — just after World War II — welcoming Onassis with Greek flags in Hamburg, where he built the one of the world’s largest tankers.
