Kythira Airport Named After Onassis Family

Athens_Airport_Eleftherios_VenizelosThe airport of the island of Kythira in southern Greece is now officially known as the “Alexandros Aristotle Onassis Airport.”
The change to the airport’s name owes to the contribution of Alexander Onassis to the airport’s construction and to Greek aviation generally. The official re-naming ceremony was held in the presence of several Greek politicians, local government representatives and professionals from the aviation sector.
Τhe Municipality of Kythira initially received permission from the Alexander A. Onassis Foundation to use the name. The Greek Transport Ministry later vouched its approval. The airport’s name change follows the example of many Greek airports that have taken the names of important historical figures. A statue in honor of Alexander Onassis is expected to be erected at the airport.
