A boat carrying illegal immigrants sank off the coast of the Greek island of Tilos, in the Aegean Sea, due to a fire. So far the Greek Coast Guard was able to recover the body of one dead passenger, while the Turkish Coast Guard safely rescued 81 illegal immigrants.
According to Greek news, authorities were alerted about the incident shortly after 10am on Friday. However, when the Greek Coast Guard arrived in the area, the vessel was already in flames.
Greek Navy ships were also involved in the operation, while it remains unknown how the Turkish Coast Guard vessel was involved in the case. It is, however, probable that the vessel was in the nearby area.
At the moment, a Greek warship, a Super Puma rescue helicopter and a Greek Coast Guard boat are cruising along the borders to locate any other survivors.
