Quake Jolts Northwestern Greece

Quake Jolts Northwestern GreeceThe Geodynamic Institute of Athens announced that early on Monday morning a strong earthquake was felt in the region of Epirus, western Greece.
The earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale took place at 3.54 am on Monday morning, at about 32 kilometers north of Igoumenitsa. It occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers. The earthquake was felt across Epirus as well as in the Ionian islands, the region of Thessaly and Aetolia-Acarnania. So far no injuries or damages have been reported.
The western part of Greece is an area prone to earthquakes. In January a strong earthquake of 5.8 magnitude hit the Greek island of Kefalonia. The numerous aftershocks caused heavy damages to the island’s infrastructure. The strong earthquake reawakened memories of the devastating 1953 quakes on Kefalonia and the neighboring island of Zakinthos, when a 7.2-magnitude quake hit three days after a 6.4 quake, killing hundreds, injuring thousands and destroying almost all the buildings on the islands.
