Two Corfu Police Accused of Blackmailing Bet Shop Operator

police carTwo police sergeants in Corfu and a third man were arrested May 5 on charges of involvement in illegal activities. The two officers, aged 42 and 45, have been charged with breach of duty, blackmail and bribery, while the 49-year-old man stands accused of complicity with blackmail and bribery. The sergeants were allegedly blackmailing the keeper of a shop illegally operating online gambling machines, demanding 50% of his monthly take for their silence. However, they gradually started asking for more money, despite pocketing 12,000 euros since November. For two months, the officers, sitting in a marked police car, reportedly received bribes in sealed envelopes via the 49-year-old third party. The two officers will be suspended pending investigation.
