Chaos as Protest Farmers Give Away Produce at Street Markets

laikes-14Thousands of citizens have rushed to the street markets of Athens and Thessaloniki Wednesday where farmers are handing out their produce for free in protest at reforms implemented by the Greek government. They are planning to distribute about 65 tons of fruit and vegetables and 1.5 tons of fish.
The situation was chaotic due to the huge number of consumers, who were fighting over bags of fruit and vegetables. In the street market of Kolonos, western Athens, a 100-metre-long bench was shattered as frenzied people grabbed products. Farmers could only watch as their protest turned into a battlefield and could not restrain consumers, and continued the handout from their trucks.
In Attica, farmers are giving away their products in the street markets of Nea Smirni, Peristeri, Kolonos, Drapetsona, Nikaia, Menidi and Elefsina. Producers in Thessaloniki, northern Greece followed suit at the street market of Kamara.
On May 1, agricultural producers will participate in demonstrations along with the workers, self-employed and pensioners.
