Influenza's Greek Victims List Extends

According to the epidemiological data of the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO), up to this morning there were 83 deceased while 57 people were hospitalized in intensive care units (ICU).
It is worth mentioning that only this year, about 240 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza H1N1 were detected in Greece and they were hospitalized in ICU while last year, until April, the number of the deceased was only 49, almost half of this year’s influenza’s victims.
Experts point out that this year the mortality is soaring compared to the past two winters. At the same time, scientists of KEELPNO recommend that Greek citizens should not receive antiviral treatment at the appearance of the first symptoms. What is more, as KEELPNO scientists note, it is important that people with symptoms such as fever, cough, headache and pain in muscles and joints seek medical attention immediately.
Based on the warnings of KEELPNO experts, people who suffer from severe and chronic diseases, the elderly as well as the immunocompromised are those mostly at risk.
Prevention Tips:
Studies have shown that 50-80 percent of respiratory infections are transmitted through touch, pathogenic microorganisms which exist on door handles, telephone receivers, computer keyboards and generally on items of frequent use.
It is therefore extremely important to maintain meticulous hand hygiene. Hand washing should take place before preparing and consuming food, before and after visiting the toilet, after contact with animals and of course after each financial transaction.
