A Greek in Ukraine: ‘I Saw People Marching to Their Death’

UkraineThe whole world is watching the developments in the Ukraine with bated breath, praying for the bloodshed to stop. The Greek Journalist Nikos Fragkakis, who has been living and working in Kiev for the past twenty years, gives us insight on Ukraine’s incidents.

“Today, things are quiet. The Parliament issued a resolution at 2:30 in the morning ordering to cease fire from the government’s side in order for the bloodshed to stop since they are close to reaching an agreement. However, no official announcement has yet been released. For the moment, people mourn for their dead and wait to see what will happen,” stated Mr. Fragkakis at Newsit.

“I have been living in Ukraine for the past twenty years. This is a soviet country. I had never guessed that the Ukrainian people could react like that,” he continued.

“An extraordinary thing happened last night. People sat at their home entrances up to 3 a.m. They were not talking, not screaming. It was a silent protest,” he added.

“It was unique seeing the faces of those people “dancing” a new kind of the Dance of Zalogo. I cannot believe that such things are still happening in the 21st century. I could see their peaceful faces while they were marching towards their death. People from the age of 16 and 17 to 70 and 80 years old.  The thing that shocked me was that when a bullet hit them, they fell without making any noise. Not even an “ah.” Nothing. They were determined to die,” Mr. Fragkakis continued.

According to him, the dead reached 77 and the injured are about 1,100.
