An Australian Visits Psiloritis

psiloritisThe relations between Australia and Crete are now stronger, after the article “Meet and Crete” written by Ian Robert Smith was published in the magazine The Weekend Australian.

Ian Smith made a different and original route climbing the Greek mountain of Mount Ida or Psiloritis, as we call it. He went in for an adventure in the highest mountain of Crete- an island rich with history that dates back to an epic era and leads up to World War II.

Furthermore, he stated: “during the German occupation and especially during invasions,  a majority of soldiers from Britain, New Zealand and Australia, who were stranded, went to the mountains where they roamed, were fed and sheltered by locals who risked being shot for doing so”.  He also noted that- “their memory lives in Greece and Australia, like a modern thriller.” He continues describing his tour in the valley of Crete, followed by a vivid description of the Greek landscape and traditional Greek costumes of older men, reminding us of the “the heroic ages”. He didn’t neglect to mention the well-known outstanding Greek and Cretan hospitality.”
