German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäeuble, one of the most reviled people by Greeks who blame him for pushing international lenders to impose harsh austerity measures in return for rescue loans, has been an honorary citizen of Makrakomi, Fthiotida for 21 years.
That was in return for the German municipality of Kohl donating a fire truck to the Greek town in 1991. It is in the western part of the Phthiotis regional unit in Greece. The seat of the municipality is the town Spercheiada.
When Schauble left the Ministry and became parliamentary leader of the Christian Democratic Party, he was awarded the diploma and medal of the city by the municipality of Makrakomi.
His representative was the one to receive the awards in a ceremony which was held in the town hall of Makrakomi but it was said to be uncertain if he even knows of the honor.
