Greece Gives Up EU-Western Balkan Summit

thessalonikiGreece will reportedly abandon plans to host a summit meeting of European Union and Western Balkan countries next year when it assumes the six-month rotating Presidency of the EU in Januarky, the newspaper Kathimerini reported.
The meeting had been planned for Thessaloniki and in February, 2011 – in the midst of a growing economic crisis – the Foreign Ministry declared that, “Greece proposes to convene an EU-Western Balkans summit aimed at adopting a political declaration that will set a specific, ambitious-but-realistic target date for completion of the accession processes of the Western Balkan countries.”
The idea has now apparently been shelved though because of a lack of interest from other countries in attending, although the event would have brought some prestige to Greece as it attempts to recover from its crisis and attract foreign investors and show it is on the rebound.
