Greek Feta Reaches Higher Levels in France

greek-feta-cheeseThe value of Greek feta cheese imports in France has increased within 2012 (25,820, 870 euros) in comparison with 2010 (22,040,131 euros), of which the share of Greek feta in 2012 represents a good 38% of the total imports of France in feta, while in 2010 it represented a 34% ( 4% increase).

The above are included in a market research on the dairy products field in France, realized by the Embassy of Paris’ Office for Economic and Commercial Affairs.
Greece also exports kefalotyri, kasseri and kefalograviera to France.

The main countries of origin for dairy products to France are: Italy, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Ireland and Spain. Greece ranks low among the countries which export dairy products to France, with a total value of 8,375,841 euros in 2010 and 10,307,566 euros in 2012, with its exports being increased by 23%.

Specifically, in 2012 exports of Greek feta to France showed an increase of 30% (9,720,152 euros) compared to 2010 (7,452,387 euros).

Kefalotyri imports in 2010 ranged at 43,273 euros and in 2012 fell sharply to only 12,236 euros.
Regarding the imports of yellow cheese (kasseri and kefalograviera), they fell by 15% in 2012 (392, 879 euros) in relation to 2010 (2,582,997 euros), at the same time that 2012 exports were more than doubled (421,635 euros) compared with those ones of 2010 ( 209,429 euros).

France is actually considered to be the “land of cheese”, having 400 distinct types of French cheese grouped into eight categories. Regarding the average annual per capita consumption of cheese, France holds the second position worldwide (92% of French people consume dairy products at least once a week, and the average annual per capita consumption is 24 kg), while Greece ranks first throughout the world, with an annual per capita consumption of cheese close to 30 kg.
