In view of economic and societal collapse in crisis-stricken Greece, there have been several incidents recorded in many schools on the island of Crete, where students are actually seeking snacks in trash bins.
The educational community is sounding the alarm as this phenomenon is becoming uncontrollable,and is discussing the creation of an institution that will offer meals at schools, given that it now seems to be something more than just a crying need.
The president of the Teachers’ Association of Heraklion, with his personal intervention in the city council, reported a specific incident of a school student who took a piece of pie out of the trash to eat. And as he stressed, this incident is not the only one.
Costas Ploumis, also stated that many parents confess to their children’s teachers that they now face the difficulty of even offering a single plate of food to their children. However, in most cases parents do not want their problem to be known.
