Spiegel Says Greek Tax Inspectors Inept

spiegel“The Greek tax authorities are incompetent and do not want to levy a large amount of tax debt,” Spiegel journal cited in a report, Incompetent Tax Inspectors.

According to Deutsche Welle, the German magazine’s report said that “the IMF and the European Commission came to this conclusion. The auditors recommend for this reason much of the tax audits to be organized as semi-state companies. Until this happens, 200 private auditors should be recruited and  another 500 by the end of 2014.

Since the tax revenues collected by state auditors are 50% less than the Troika’s targets, only 1.1 instead of 2 billion euros were levied last year. For 2013 Athens calculates a slight increase. ”

Spiegel’s report said that even the special services set up for this reason are ineffective: “One more category: 130 tax inspectors who got rich abroad were covered by their colleagues. In addition, many employees were deemed “insufficient” and “old”.
