Renovation For Cyprus' Apostle Andreas Monastery

acd46c4e196816112d8a291831576743_XLThe Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II has stated that the monastery of Apostle Andreas in an area occupied by Turkish troops will be restored according to a study prepared by the University of Patra, and “nobody can intervene to that (study)”.
Invited to comment on the signing of the agreement between the Development Program of the United Nations (UNDP) and the Church of Cyprus for the restoration of the historic monastery in the Turkish occupied Karpas Peninsula,  Chrysostomos pointed out that since UNDP undertook the responsibility to call on for tenders, the study prepared by the University of Patra will be implemented. “There can be no interference by the Turks to that,” he added.
The Archbishop said he was happy over the decision while Karpasia Bishop Christoforos thanked God for helping in signing this agreement, and added that he hopes to see the restored monastery, so that everyone who wish to pay a visit will be given that opportunity, stressing at the same moment that a potential cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots does not seem impossible.
Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou has as well expressed the satisfaction of the government with the agreement reached over the restoration of the historic monastery in Karpasia. Stephanou said that “this development is of great importance, since after many years of efforts, we now have an established institutional framework for the implementation of the project based on the agreed procedures and technical specifications and under the auspices of the United Nations.” The project will be financed by the UNDP, the U.S., the European Union, the Church of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot side as well.
