Police Release Suspect Photos in Kidnap Case

Marios Papageorgious was kidnapped last August and is still missing

An investigation by Greek Police has yet to yield any results in the kidnapping case of 26-year-old Marios Papageorgiou, who they alleged was taken on Aug. 10 by a gang that was reportedly headed by a 72-year-old close friend of hisĀ  family.
The suspects recently arrested by the police have refused to co-operate or release any information about Papageorgiou’s whereabouts. Police have released photos of the suspects and their personal data, as well as that of the missing man, hoping it will lead to evidence or leads.
Six out of the seven suspects have been remanded in custody, while the seventh – a woman – was temporarily released. The defendants are facing offenses of conspiracy or association, and kidnapping. Police now hope that somebody will be able to recognize the alleged victim and provide them with enough evidence that will lead them to him.
According to the police file, the 72-year-old mastermind of the kidnapping scheme called him on Aug. 10 while he was in his cottage in Diakofto with his mother.Ā  He left the house in a hurry after the phone call and went missing. On the same day, the suspects his 75-year-old mother, who is an ophthalmologist and a professor at the University of Athens and asked her to pay 620,000 euros ransom if she wanted to get her son back alive.
She reportedly talked with him on and off over the next seven days and managed to collect some 350,000 eurosĀ  but when she asked to talk to her son before the ransom was paid the kidnappers refused. The woman then became suspicious and called the police.
Officers from the Police Department of Attica and the National Intelligence Service (EYP) organized an investigation which led to the arrest of the suspects on Oct. 16. According to police, after failing to collect the money, the gang had decided to also kidnap the mother but were hindered by the authorities.
