Australia’s Labor representative for Calwell, Maria Vamvakinou, said she believes the participation of Australia in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will prove beneficial for the Greek and Greek-Cypriot issues over time.
According to Vamvakinou, the dynamic presence of the Greek and Cypriot communities in Australia and their constant efforts of thoroughly informing the country’s politicians about the issues of their home countries will strengthen trilateral relations even further.
After five years of continuous efforts and $24 million, Australia managed to get a seat as a non-permanent member of the UNSC. Its service will commence in 2013 and will last for two years. The effort of including Australia in the UNSC began five years ago by the then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who congratulated those who made it happen.
Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr noted that Australia managed to get this time the necessary votes that would allow its participation in the UNSC and aims to support the interests of weaker countries.
